What you should know about Tonyhobba Architects

Architect in Surf Coast, Building in Surf Coast, Designer in Surf Coast, Hobby in Surf Coast

Our practice is located on the Surf Coast of Victoria honest off the Immense Ocean Road. The Huge Otway National Park and local surf beaches are our playground and our inspiration. For us a appropriate building is a building that is alive. It expresses itself in patterns, materials, light and shadow, shape and form. It is cohesive and whole, homey and welcoming, ordinary and extraordinary. It supports our way of life, but is unfold to grow and change. It allows its inhabitants to be themselves and to be self creating. We start with an idea an inspiration a point of reference a quality. Ideas reach from our clients and their lives from the landscape, the weather from theater, poetry and art from vogue happenings, from imagination. Creating a living building from an idea is for us an ongoing conversation: a collaboration between client, architect, landscape, weather, materials, shapes and forms, light and shadow, regulatory authorities and other professionals. Each of these collaborations produces a project that is unique. A project where the single central quality which makes the difference cannot be named. Living and busy in this unique landscape makes us aware of and sensitive to our automatic environment its power and its vulnerability. Our commitment to coastal habitation drives us to find a unique language’ for our buildings, a language that respects and reflects our unique coastal environment. Our practice actively champions architecture and urban planning in the region and is closely involved with State and local government planning bodies. The practice is an advocate for good regional design including hosting and curating exhibitions of the labor of local architects.

This project was inspired by the eroding forces of the ocean. The oxiding patina nestles into the coastal cape, suggesting a segment of washed up furniture, maybe cobbled together with found materials. Overlooking Bass Straight, this large residential project sits quietly in the landscape, barely visible. The landscape was the driver for the design, with a stand of iron bark trees defining the form, scale, views, vista’s and materialality. Six years in the making, completed in late 2013, with the landscape evolution a life long project for the owners, experimenting and trialing native species. The house sits simply and successfully as a component of this landscape. Set among st a attractive established garden, this substantial additions and alterations project was shaped around two gorgeous Jacaranda trees. A rewarding and thriving community engagement process resulted in a master plan that reflects the coastal community’s aspirations for community markets, a retail precinct, conference facilities, walking and cycling trails, ecobased tourist accommodation, boating and fishing operations and facilities. A dedicated day spa, yoga studio, conferencing facilities, treatment and consulting rooms, gymnasiums, swimming pools are designed to nestle sensitively into the flimsy landscape while providing a calm and nurturing experience. Inspired by the sandstone caves and cliffs at the bottom of the site, this project had a requirement to accommodate an extended family of 37. Collaborating with stone, metal and glass artisans we created a multilevel cave, with materials and textures directly referencing walks on the local beach. Our approach was to bear a complete contrast in experience of rural life. The barn, restored as firm and dark, introverted and grounded, contrasts against the soaring lightweight structure that places the residents high overhead the property, a bird’s eye view, extroverted. Located on one of Victoria’s maximum loved surf beaches this family enclave accommodates three generations of a family of surfing enthusiasts and their equipment. The design of four segregate houses reflects the form of the local geography by layering the roofs cape to succeed the intricate contours. A new house overlooking the cliffs of Jarosite Beach.
